Results of the May 23-24 2015 Bill Pilon Memorial Spring Bird Count
submitted by Christine Trudeau Brunet
Eleven birders participated in our annual Bill Pilon Memorial Spring Bird Count.
Despite the unfavourable weather our combined efforts produced a total of 144 species. Windy conditions made hearing difficult and even on the Alfred Lagoons` observation tower, it was sure hard to observe through the telescopes!!!
Two teams added a new species to the count. The Yellow-throated Vireo was observed by Jonathan, Jacques and I.
Interestingly this weekend seemed to be peak migration for Tennessee Warblers. During the 2-day period Jacques and I happened to hear 8 of them.
The following expected species could not be found, Gray Partridge, Upland Sandpiper, Chimney Swift, Horned Lark, Pileated Woodpecker, and Cedar Waxwing.
Bill Radix with Défrid Théoret tallied 62 species in the day that they were able to participate. They are the only team who located a White-rumped Sandpiper.
Thérèse Bélanger-Dunsmore with Frances Fraser, and Joelle Claudon travelled together while Nicole St-Pierre and Louise Leblanc-Mazur noted species from their yards. Their combined efforts produced a total of 74 species. Noteworthy species include Merlin, Great Horned Owl (Nicole St-Pierre), Black-billed Cuckoo, Barred Owl, and Field Sparrow.
Jonathan France found a total of 81 species of which Greater Yellowlegs and Bay-breasted Warbler were unique to the count.
Lance and Andrée Laviolette tallied 112 species and they contributed the only Red-shouldered Hawk, Blue-winged Teal, Short-billed Dowitcher, Black Tern, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Blackburnian Warbler, and Canada Warbler,
Christine Trudeau Brunet with Jacques Bouvier tallied 122 species of which White-winged Scoter, Common Goldeneye, Common Merganser, Sora, Whip-poor-will, Hermit Thrush, Vesper Sparrow, House Finch, and Pine Siskin were unique to the count.
As mentioned above, our combined efforts produced 144 SPECIES
